Overprint Varnish

This is a light coating applied during the printing process or as an off-line process. It provides protection from the wear and tear of everyday handling and is usually colorless.

  • Varnish is available in glossy, dull, or satin finishes.
  • This coating can be applied as an all-over coat or in spots to highlight a specific area of a printed piece.
  • Gloss varnish creates a smooth surface over the paper.
  • Varnish provides for a more smooth surface, filling in any voids or irregularities that the paper might have.

UV Coating

This is a liquid coating cured with UV light. It is more durable than varnish coating, and provides one of the best protections for printed surfaces.

  • Coating achieves higher gloss, greater color and sharper graphics
  • Varnish is available in glossy, dull, or satin finishes.
  • This coating can be applied as an all-over coat or in spots to highlight a specific area of a printed piece.

Laminated

Laminating is the process of applying a film to either one side or both sides of a printed document. The use of lamination serves several purposes. It is the most expensive form of coating, providing the greatest durability, protection and visual impact. The different types of laminated coatings are:

Laminated Polypropylene

This is the clearest and brightest type of film and it is used for such applications as magazine covers, posters, labels, marketing materials, and write on / wipe off calendars. It offers chemical resistance and great optical properties.

Laminated Polyester

It is most often used for book covers, dust jackets, folders, and video slipcovers. Polyester film is heat resistant, foldable, scuff and scratch resistant, flexible, and tough.

Hot Stamping

Hot stamping is used to create a highly reflective image with a bright and dense metallic appearance. It is commonly used to increase impact for brand names, logos, or highlighted spot areas. It is produced by striking a metal plate with an engraved image against a foil film. Then, it transfers the foil coating from the roll film onto the paper.

  • A wide selection of hot stamping colors are available, such as gold, silver, pearl and other metallic colors.
  • This method is preferable to metallic inks given that the tendency of the ink to be absorbed by the paper provides for a duller looking effect.

Indexing

Tab cutting for indexing (step indexing, thumb indexing) is a cutting process that forms tabs on the fore-edge of finished bound books. This allows the end user quick and easy access to various sections within the book or catalogue, improving its value to the reader.

Embossing

Often used in combination with hot stamping, embossing is a technique for altering the surface of a sheet of paper by allowing designs to be raised in the paper. The procedure involves the use of two dies, one fitting into the other so that the raised die forces the stock into the recessed die to create the embossed impression.

  • This process is used to attract attention or convey a high quality textural contrast in relation to the surrounding area of the paper.
  • A page on average can withstand 2.5 times the caliper (thickness) of the paper.

Debossing

This term is used to describe the opposite process or effect, which involves applying pressure to the front side of a stock forcing the material away or down from the paper surface.

Blind Embossing

This is an embossed image that is not stamped over a printed image or with a foil. The color of the image is the same as the paper.

Registered Embossing

This is a process that places the embossed image in alignment with another element created with ink, foil, punching, or with a second embossed image.

Die Cuting

There are two basic types of die cutting, steal blade and perforating.

Steel Blade Die Cuts: Involves the use of metal dies to give paper specific shapes or designs that cannot be accomplished by a guillotine cutter. By using knife-edge cutting blades formed into a pattern or die, a machine presses the die into the material to produce the desired shape. Almost any shape can be created and applied to a diverse array of raw materials, such as to labels, envelopes, folders, books, brochures and documents.

Perforating Die Cuts (or Perf Cutting)

This process does not fully trim the desired materials away from the original shape, but instead creates a cut out area that remains in place. Perforating is used when a desired section is to be removed from the document, but not immediately.
